With the arrival of spring and warmer weather comes the desire to refresh our home decor. In an effort to brighten up our home I replaced darker curtains with new, modern ones and switched up a few other decor pieces for a more light and airy feel. Most of us can’t really afford to completely revamp and redecorate a room with the change in season, but a few small adjustments in texture and tone can make a world of difference.
Change the Curtains
Since we moved into this house we’ve had a muted purple curtain hanging near our back french doors. While they were slightly sheer, the color was starting to depress me. I found a beautiful light fabric with a modern pattern and had them custom made from a shop on Etsy, Sweet Pea Pretties. We were in need of replacing the curtain rod (thanks to little kids who like to pull on the curtains), so my husband came up with the idea of making a wooden valance. (You can find plenty of tutorials on Pinterest to make your own.)
Update Pillows
Our living room couch is a dark gray color. In order to lighten the space, I chose light colored throw pillows to brighten up the room. You can do this by replacing the entire pillow or just adding a pillow cover (less expensive option).
Add Fresh Flowers
Greenery and light colored flowers is a great way to freshen up a room on a budget! I love grabbing a bouquet at the grocery store to brighten up the kitchen or living room. If live flowers aren’t your thing, realistic faux bouquets can do the trick too. Snag these at either Hobby Lobby or Michael’s with their 40-50% off coupons.
Trendy Decor
Rustic, modern farmhouse decor is SUPER trendy right now. I absolutely fell into the trap and not even mad about it. Over-sized wicker baskets hold our throw blankets and the coffee table is dressed with wire baskets and simple white candles. You can check out some of my favorite Hearth & Hand picks here.

Pull It Together
Carpeting is 100% not my thing. I much prefer wooden floors, but there’s something about a shaggy white or light gray area rug that can really tie a room together. Search for discount rug stores in your area or keep an eye out for Target’s typical home sales.
