Not gonna lie. It feels like school just ended and we’re already paying tuition for the new school year, buying uniforms, lunch bags, backpacks, and watching out for all the school supply deals. Starting early can take a little less pressure off the wallet just by spreading out the expense. Having a budget in place can really help reign you in when you see all the cute back to school clothes and notebooks, pens, pencils, etc. If your little school dwellers are anything like mine, you’ll need to set expectations and limit them to that.
This year my daughter is in private school for kindergarten which means she’s required to wear uniforms every day. There are even regulations on the kind of backpacks they can bring. You can see our recent roundup of character-free girl’s backpacks for ideas. Deals are already popping up for school uniforms in stores like Lands End, French Toast (Save 25% off Uniform Bottoms with code QWRGQC), Gymboree and Target (save 20% with code UNIFORMS).
Check out our ideas to revamp your after-school snacks and lunch box meals.
My daughter loves to express herself through wild outfit choices, so while she is required to wear uniforms 8a-3p every day, all bets are off after school. Set expectations to keep back to school clothes budget friendly and create a checklist your little ones can refer to before continuously grabbing items off the racks.
Back to School Clothes Checklist (DOWNLOAD & PRINT)
- 2-3 pairs of shoes (1 sneaker, 1 casual, 1 dressy)
- 8-10 shirts (mix and match graphic and solids) your weather climate will determine the ratio of short-sleeve to long-sleeve shirts
- 7 pairs of pants (jeggings, jeans, and knit leggings are great for layering)
- 2 coats (rain/lightweight jacket, winter coat)
- 6-10 pairs of socks and underwear
- 3-5 zip-up hoodies
- 2-4 sweaters
These will be your staple items for back to school. It’s best to stock up on basic items like solid color tops and pants in order to maximize your outfit options and spend less in the long run.
