Age Appropriate Chores for Toddlers

Sharing is caring!

Kids are messy, but now I have a toddler that’s old enough to start helping out around the house! yay!! There are plenty of small tasks your little ones can do and they’ll get a feeling of self-accomplishment too! I’m going to share with you my list of age appropriate chores for toddlers and preschoolers.

Brush their Teeth

Isabella loves to brush her own teeth. She does really well for just starting out on her own, but it’s important for younger children to understand that mommy or daddy does first (or second) as well.

Pick up Toys & Clothes

Shortly after Isabella turned one we had her start helping to clean up her toys. She still needs a lot of guidance, but is perfectly capable of cleaning up all her toys from the living room and bedroom. I think it’s important to not overwhelm smaller children with a broad task of “clean up your room”, but to assist with direct phrases such as “now gather your books and put them on the bookshelf”. I’ve tried to give Isabella multiple orders, but she’s just not ready for that. The key is patience!

Every day we have her put her clothes in the hamper when she gets dressed for the day and before bath time. She will even help take Gabriel’s clothes to the hamper. This is a simple task that any toddler can handle.

Helping out in the Kitchen

Chances are your kid is underfoot while you’re unloading the dishwasher or making dinner. Put them to use! Toddlers can hand you the silverware from the dishwasher to put away- and it will save your back from bending over!

Your toddlers can also help place napkins and silverware on the table for dinner. I prefer to do the plates myself in order to avoid broken dishes. But older children most certainly can take care of this part.

Isabella gathers the dirty napkins after dinner to throw in the trashcan.

Feed the Pets

Have your little ones help feed the family dog or cat! Isabella loves scooping the dog food and pouring into Lulu’s bowl. She can make quite the mess, but likes helping out. Lulu can clean up the spilled kibble, no problem 😉

Sweep Floors/Dust

This one is a hit with BOTH my 3 year old and 1 year old. They literally fight over who’s going to sweep the floors! It’s hilarious! We have all hard surface floors in our house, tile in the kitchen and bathrooms and hardwood throughout the rest of the house. To clean them we use Bona Disposable Dusting Cloths. They are literally the best pads I’ve come across, locking in all the dust, endless kid crumbs, and Lulu dog hair. They’re so easy to use, even my toddlers can do it! That’s a win in my book! I have one kid using the cloths on a stick mop (works with either Bona sticks or almost any other competitor stick), and another crawling around on the floor dusting by hand 😉 Whatever gets the job done!

Cleaning gets done 2x’s faster with Bona Disposable Dusting Cloths (when my kids aren’t helping) leaving me with more time to spend with my family.

Bona products can be found at your local Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowe’s, Walmart, Target, and Home Depot.

How I'm Failing Myself and My Family | Crazy Life with Littles

Tuesday 27th of December 2016

[…] My kids are currently 3 and 1.5 years old. By mid-year they’ll be 4 and 2 and capable of helping with so much. They already are able to do many things on their own. Yet I find myself just doing for them because it takes less time and less fighting. This year I will focus on empowering my kids to take on new tasks. They’ll learn they are perfectly capable to do these things and develop a sense of pride in the meantime. (Related: Age Appropriate Chores for Toddlers) […]

Wow, you are super mom and your kids are super kids! This is so awesome. Now can you come to my house and teach my kids? LOL They only seem to want to help at other people's homes.

Hahhaah I remember being like that! I would whine and complain about my chores and then happily go to my best friend's house and help her ???

I love getting my girls involved. Even Lily at 2! As least they think a lot of it is fun...for now. Lol!

Great list! It's so true that we need to implement responsibility into our children early on...if only they would continue this eagerness to help and clean when they became teens..lol. That's an entirely different story :)
