Cold and flu season is here and it’s circled our family a couple times already. You may have seen the handy kit my husband and I break out when we get sick. It’s definitely no fun when the little ones get sick, although the cuddles are amazing! Gabriel is a big time cuddler especially on day one of being sick. Isabella is, of course, our little drama queen, taking it to the max. We’ve been pretty lucky though that they’ll usually sleep rather well at night. I’ve rounded up some of the techniques and products we use to get the babies comfortable.
Gabriel usually only takes a pacifier for naps and bedtime, but when he’s sick he’ll use it almost all day since it makes him feel better. Nûby™ Snoozies™ is the cutest little stuffed toy that attaches to almost any pacifier. Sick or not, if Gabriel has a small toy or remote in his hands he stays relaxed and chill. I love that the pacifier can be removed from the plush toy and sterilized to remove those sick germs. The Snoozies set comes with Nuby natural Flex™ All Silicone Pacifier. The nipple on this paci is similar to the natural movement of a mother’s nipple during feeding, plus the nubs around it help sooth teething gums.
Once our babes were a little older we were able to start using some cold medicine to help dry up their little runny noses and suppress coughs. We still would use a nasal aspirator to clear runny noses. A drop or two of saline spray in each nostril will help loosen up before using the aspirator. I’m loving the Breathe-eez Nasal Aspirator. One because you can control the strength of the suction with your mouth and second because it’s completely clear making me feel better knowing its clean and sanitary.
Before laying down to sleep, I rub vapor rub on the bottoms of the kid’s feet and cover them with socks. This helps prevent coughing so they can sleep all night! Let’s face it, having sick babies is exhausting so you’re going to want your sleep too!
Other helpful tips:
- Use a humidifier in their room while sleeping.
- Prop up the head of the bed to help your baby breathe better.
- Sit in a hot, steamy bathroom to help break up mucus.
- Give Infant Tylenol to temporary reduce aches and fevers (consult your physician prior to administering)
- Give Children’s Allegra or Benadryl to older kids to dry up runny noses and aid in sleep (consult your physician prior to administering)
- Offer plenty of fluids (breast milk, formula, water, juice)

I really need to try the Vicks on the feet trick! We've been battling some major snuffly noses and coughs over here :(

We are right in the middle of a round of sickness in our house and I can attest to these tips! The humidifier is amazing and I wish we had two for when my husband or I is sick at the same time as the kids (It's not fair when that happens!).

These are great! Having a sick little one is the worst! One of my brothers is a pharmacist and so I always, always bug him for dosing information and tips of what to do whenever my daughter is sick... lol!
