DIY 2-Tier A-Frame Plant Stand

Sharing is caring!

Do you have a lot of small potted plants? Then this modern-style 2-tier A-frame plant stand is for you!

Modern DIY 2-Tier A-Frame Plant Shelf

We built on this beautiful deck to the front of our house late last year. We’re still in the process of decorating and loved the idea of adding a two-tier plant shelf to go along with the DIY Plant Wall. I loved the look of this plant shelf, but not the price. So let’s DIY it!

Cut List

  • 4 – 2 in. x 2 in. at 36″ each
  • 6 – 2 in. x 2 in. at 30″ each
  • 2 – Fence Picket boards at 12 3/4″ each
  • 4 – Fence Picket boards at 29 1/2″ each
  • 2 – Fence Picket boards at 20″ each
  • 2 – Furring Strip Boards at 12 5/8″
  • 3 – Furring Strip Boards at 20″
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 12 5/8″ x 28 1/8″
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 20″ x 28 1/4″

Pocket Holes

  • add 2 pocket holes to each end of the 6 – 2×2 lumber cut at 30″
  • add 3 pocket holes to each end of the short sided fence picket boards ( 12 3/4″ pieces and 20″ pieces)
  • add 2 pocket holes to each end of the 1 in. x 2 in. furring strip boards

Assembly

Assemble the frame. Lay your inside 2×2 @ 30″ lumber down and place the longer 36″ pieces on the outside. Line the top inside support flush with the top of the outside pieces. Attach using glue and 2 1/2″ pocket screws.

Measure down 16″ and attach your next 30″ piece using glue and 2 1/2″ pocket screws. Repeat with the third and final 30″ piece.

Repeat steps to create your second frame.

Once both frames are built, attach the cabinet hinges.

Align your hinges away from the pocket holes. Mark the holes with a pencil and drill pilot holes. Attach the hinges using included screws.

Next, assemble your planter boxes.

To build the top shelf, set up your fence picket boards (2 – at 12 3/4″ each; 2 – at 29 1/2″).

Add glue to the short sides and attach to longer boards using pocket hole screws.

Repeat process to make the bottom box using the remaining fence pickets (2 at 20″ and 2 at 29 1/2″)

For the smaller box, attach 12 5/8″ 1×2 furring strips using pocket hole screws.

Repeat process for the larger box using 3 – 1×2 furring strips at 20″ each.

Add plywood pieces to fit inside. You can attach these by using brad nails directly into the furring strip support pieces or through the outside of the box. It’s up to you. My plywood cuts were a snug fit so I didn’t actually feel the need to secure in place. The weight of the plants will hold them in place as well.
