I like to think we all have a Monica closet or room in our homes. One that gets all the junk, clutter, and stuff that doesn’t quite have a home. Ours just happened to be the never-used dining room. There once was a dining table in there collecting boxes of craft supplies and photo props. Then the table disappeared and it became an extension of the playroom/my office. This room just didn’t have it’s on purpose until we decided to turn our dining room into a guest room!
Our dining room is situated off the kitchen with a small opening and full open facing the kids’ playroom. The plan was to create a wall with french doors closing it off from the playroom and building a sliding barn door to separate it from the kitchen. My husband purchased kits in order to DIY the sliding barn door and murphy bed. The kits allowed us to show our own style while using all the proper hardware. The transformation is AMAZING!
This is the wall built to close off the playroom from the new guest room. The french doors allow plenty of light to come into the room since it does not have windows. I do still need to purchase bamboo style privacy shades for the doors for when we have guests come to stay. When the murphy bed is folded up, the basket contains bedding, accent pillows and blankets. I fell in love with this honeycomb mirror from Varaluz! It’s such a pretty piece that coordinated well into the space. The tribal print lumbar throw pillows and rustic bronze grid end table are also from Varaluz (seen below). The quality is just so good and will last for a while.

My husband handmade the sliding barn door and used this hardware kit to hang on the wall blocking the opening off from the kitchen. He stained the wood a gorgeous mix of grayish-brown.
Ah! And here comes the beast of a project! The DIY Murphy Bed! The guest room isn’t large, but can easily hold a full-size bed with walking space. While we don’t have guests though, it’s nice to fold up the bed to create a little extra room. I do plan on utilizing this room as an office as well. This is the Murphy Bed hardware kit and plans we purchased in order to make the bed. We added our own design to the front (or bottom, however you think of it) of the bed for a little extra design element.
The side cabinet was one we had already purchased from Ikea and plan on getting another one to balance out the bed and create more storage for guests. The rug is a SUPER soft shag I snagged at a great deal at Kohl’s along with the white pucker stripe bedding set, sheets and linen throw pillow.
And now for the BEFORE picture. I’m almost too embarrassed to show you what we started with. This is a room that I NEVER showed in any photos on social media or even BTS.
