1. Cut Your Scrap Wood into Triangles
Set your miter saw to a 45-degree angle and trim off the end of your wood strip. Then, measure and cut pieces 1.5–2 inches long at the same 45-degree angle. You’ll need 8 pieces per pinwheel.
📌 Tip: Use a stop block on your saw to make the cuts faster and more consistent.
2. Sand the Pieces
Lightly sand all edges and faces of your wood pieces to remove splinters and rough spots. This helps the paint absorb better too!
3. Paint or Stain Your Wood
You’ll need 4 different colors—2 pieces per color. I used:
- Minwax Golden Oak for a natural wood tone
- Red acrylic paint
- White acrylic paint
- Blue solid stain
💡 Mix a little water into your paint or stain to give it a translucent, weathered finish that still lets the wood grain peek through.
4. Assemble Your Pinwheel
Lay the wood triangles in a pinwheel shape, alternating colors. Once you’re happy with the layout, glue them in place.
Then, use another small scrap piece as a backer to hold everything together. Glue and pin nail it into place. If you don’t have a pin nailer, clamps and drying time work just fine.
5. Seal for Outdoor Use
Apply 1–2 coats of polycrylic or your favorite outdoor wood sealer to protect the finish from moisture and sun.
6. Attach to Stakes
To stake the pinwheels in pots or garden beds, use wooden dowels or garden stakes. Make a 45-degree cut at the bottom of each stake so it pushes easily into the soil.
Glue or nail the stake to the back of the pinwheel, and you’re ready to decorate!

🌼 Display Ideas:

These pinwheel stakes add such a playful and patriotic vibe wherever you place them—and the best part is, they cost next to nothing to make!
