(Perfect When You Lose Built-In Bed Storage)
We upgraded my son’s bed and lost all of the under-bed storage.
He used to have an IKEA bed frame with drawers, and honestly, those drawers worked great — until they didn’t. They started sagging, coming off the tracks and eventually falling apart. So when it was time for a new bed frame, we upgraded… and suddenly had nowhere for toys to go.
If you want to see how his room has evolved over the years, you can check out his superhero and gamer bedroom update, where we tackled storage in a totally different way.
If you’ve ever taken storage away from a kid without a replacement plan, you already know how that ends.
So instead of buying another bulky piece of furniture, I built this DIY rolling under-the-bed toy storage cart, and it has been one of the most practical projects we’ve done for his room.

Why I Built This Under-the-Bed Toy Cart
The goal was simple:
- Keep toys easy to access
- Make it easy for him to put toys away on his own
- Use the space under the bed without bulky drawers
- Create something sturdy that wouldn’t fall apart in a year
This rolling cart checks all those boxes — and honestly works better than the original drawers ever did.
What This Rolling Storage Cart Holds
This cart is sized to fit:
- Two 16-quart storage totes
- One 28-quart storage tote
It’s perfect for action figures, wrestling toys, LEGO builds, and all the random toys that somehow never fit anywhere else.
Because it rolls, my son can pull it out completely, grab what he wants, and slide it right back under the bed when he’s done — no dragging heavy bins across the floor.
Materials Used
Here’s everything I used to build this DIY rolling storage cart:
- 4 – 1½-inch Black Soft Rubber & Steel Swivel Plate Casters
(40 lb load rating each) - 24″ x 48″ x ¼” project panel
- 1×2 trim boards
(used to frame the cart and create a divider) - Wood glue
- Finish nails
- Black spray paint
Everything was easy to find at The Home Depot, which is always a win.
How to Build a DIY Rolling Under-the-Bed Storage Cart
Step 1: Cut the Base
Start with the 24″ x 48″ project panel.
This size fits perfectly under a full size bed (even with center supports) and comfortably holds all three totes.
No complicated cuts needed — just make sure the panel is square.
Step 2: Frame the Cart
Using the 1×2 trim boards, frame the entire perimeter of the panel.
- Apply wood glue first
- Secure with finish nails
This frame keeps the totes from sliding off and gives the cart a more finished look.
Step 3: Add a Divider
To keep the totes from shifting around, add a divider using another piece of 1×2 trim.
- One side fits the 28-quart tote
- The other side fits two 16-quart totes
Glue and nail the divider in place.
This small step makes a huge difference in keeping everything organized.
Step 4: Attach the Casters
Flip the cart upside down and attach one caster to each corner.
The swivel casters make it easy to roll in any direction — which is especially important when kids are the ones using it.
Step 5: Paint It
Once everything is assembled, spray paint the entire cart black.
This instantly makes it look more polished and helps it blend in under the bed.
Let it dry completely before moving on.
Step 6: Load It Up & Slide It Under the Bed
Add your storage totes, roll it into place, and enjoy having your floor back.

Why This Works Better Than Bed Drawers
After dealing with broken bed drawers, this setup is honestly an upgrade:
- No tracks to break
- No drawers getting stuck
- Easy to clean under the bed
- Kids can access everything without help
- Can be reused for future storage (seasonal items, clothes, sports gear)
It’s one of those functional DIYs that makes everyday life easier — and those are always my favorite projects.

Final Thoughts

It’s practical, kid-friendly, and adaptable as their storage needs change.
