Rainy season [aka Hurricane Season] is here and we needed to redirect our downspout drainage AWAY from the new front porch and house. Creating a dry river bed to the landscaping was our downspout drainage solution.

Creating a Dry River Bed
Materials:
- landscape barrier
- pea gravel
- larger decorative rock like river rock or Mexican Beach Pebbles
Tools:
- shovel
- rake
- gardening gloves

Step 1: Plan your space
When planning out your dry river bed, consider the current direction of water runoff. You want to create a natural path for the rain water to run. The width of the river bed should be at least 18 inches wide.

Step 2: Start digging
Dig out your area about 2-3 inches deep making sure to create a natural downward slope away from the house.
Step 3: Landscape Fabric
It’s important to create a barrier against weeds. Line your trench with a quality landscape fabric; staple down to secure.

Step 4: Lay your pebbles
Optional: To keep your stone in place, you may choose to add landscape edging to your trench.
Fill your trench with 2 inches of pea gravel. Use a rake to level it out being sure to still account for the slope.
Now you can add your larger decorative stone. We used Mexican Beach Pebbles. They are larger, smooth and a very pretty addition to the landscaping.
