Designing the perfect family kitchen island takes careful planning. We’ve revealed the final product and tips to consider when planning your own space.
A couple weeks back we shared our design process for creating a functional family kitchen island to fit our space. I’m so excited to share the final reveal!
To recap a bit…we wanted to create essentially a central hub for our family. A large place where we would reconvene after our days at work and school to make dinner,do homework and color/craft.
The completed kitchen island turned out to be the”show piece” of our home or focal piece; including a bold paint color and re-purposed bowling lane as a counter top.

Sink + Faucet
The overall design of our kitchen space is modern with a touch of farmhouse, so I knew that I wanted an apron front sink. American Standard makes the highest quality kitchen + bath products and we couldn’t be more pleased with the American Standard Apron Front Sink and Beale Pull-Down Faucet. The faucet has a stainless steel finish and hands-free technology allowing us to safely wash up after handling uncooked foods.
Bold Paint Color
With so many white elements in the kitchen, we wanted to warm it up and choose something BOLD. If you follow me on Instagram you know I was really conflicted with the color choice. Ultimately I ended up going with my first choice, Sherwin Williams Naval, with zero regrets.
Lighting
We have recessed lighting throughout the main living and kitchen area, but I wanted a decorative touch over the large island. You can never have too much light!
We went with two Varaluz Mini Pendants over the island (and one in the front entryway). These are BEAUTIFUL hand-forged iron pendants.
A few more photos of the kitchen, just because…
