There’s a cool breeze blowing. The sun is shining, leaves are falling, and home decor has shifted from the bright colors of summer to vibrant reds, oranges, and browns. It’s early fall, and in addition to the harvest-themed decoration, I am spotting pumpkin-flavored goodies everywhere I turn.

As soon as the kids went back to school, I noticed that all of the stores switched into fall mode, and pumpkin seems to be on everyone’s minds. Pumpkin is popping up everywhere from the cereal aisle to the produce section. And pumpkin-flavored SPAM! What is that about?

It also seems like every coffee shop in town is racing to be the first to release their seasonal pumpkin drinks. I love pumpkin, so I totally understand the infatuation, but unfortunately, most store-bought treats are full of sugar, preservatives and other not-so-good-for-you junk. Even many homemade treats could be cleaned up and made healthier. Pumpkin bread loaded with cream cheese and sugary pumpkin spice lattes are tasty, but I’m craving some healthy pumpkin recipes.

The holiday season is just around the corner, and I want to take advantage of the bounty of fall to make some smart choices in my diet. I want to enjoy the flavor of pumpkin and not feel guilty about it.

Pumpkin is so plentiful in the fall, and it’s actually really good for you. It is high in potassium, vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants. Pumpkin is good for your heart, but the biggest bonus is that it tastes delicious too. Plus all that extra fiber will help you feel fuller longer.

Say goodbye to that mid-morning snack craving! Using canned pumpkin makes cooking with pumpkin a breeze but preparing your own pumpkin purée isn’t that difficult and can even save you a few pennies.
