HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR CLOSET SPACE

Sharing is caring!

Thank you California Closets for sponsoring this post.

My husband and I have been making some big and small changes around the house these last few months. One of the biggest things we did, and also my favorite, was to get ride of large, dark furniture. I can’t even begin to tell you the impact this had! While the rooms seem larger and brighter, we did lose storage space in our master bedroom. To accomodate for the loss of dressers, we decided to build custom shelving in the master closet. It wasn’t long before we realized we needed some help from the experts, like California Closets.

One of the challenges we faced was now that all of our clothing, shoes, and handbags were in the small closet, it just seemed crammed. I met with Jessica, a design consultant with California Closets, to help us maximize the shared closet space. The design consultants help to create a customized design plan to meet your needs while reflecting your personal style and working within your budget.

Before I share her tips using the KonMari Method, here are a couple before and after photos of the space.

Now watch this video for the KonMari Method on closet organization.

Marie Kondo Method for Closet Organization

Jessica first suggested that we remove everything from the closet in order to start fresh. Donate clothes that don’t spark joy and start returning clothes by placing the heaviest items to the left. If an item can be folded, then it should be folded rather than hung. (Update: Marie Kondo’s folding method is actually very easy. Although we didn’t use it here, I have been practicing and plan to update the closets with the tips I watched on Netflix’s Tidy Up.) This was a huge tip for me since I was currently hanging all of my shirts, even the tees.

Another tip was to utilize more bins, baskets, and slide out drawers. The current shelving we have is too wide for the space. By adding in more shelves, we can maximize more of our closet with less wasted space. We do plan to add more slide out drawers going all the way up in the future.

Using baskets to conceal my husband’s toiletries and accessories created a clean appearance for the space. We have so much extra, unused space now too!
