LEARNING THROUGH PLAY WITH SIDEWALK CHALK

If you handed your child a box of chalk they could probably play outside for hours right? So what if you used that time to learn through play. There are so many activities and learning options available that your toddler or preschooler will actually enjoy doing. We’ve shared a few of our favorite activities and linked an even more comprehensive list below!

Start out by drawing a hopscotch board with sidewalk chalk, numbering 1-10 (or 8 like we did). Play a few rounds and throw in a few learning activities.

Number Matching

Using Numbers Sidewalk Chalk, have your child match the chalk to the corresponding number on the hopscotch game.

Counting

Have your child gather rocks, leaves, acorns, etc. and count out the correct number of each object on the appropriate number block in the hopscotch. You can also use this method to help teach addition and subtraction. For example, he or she has just counted 5 leaves on block five. Ask them “What if you took away one leaf from those five? How many leaves would you have left?”

Letter Matching

In one column, write a series of capital letters and their lower case match in a column next to it. Give your child a piece of chalk and instruct them to match the capital letter with its lower case mate.

Letter Tracing

Have a preschooler learning to write their alphabet? Write some words with sidewalk chalk and have them trace each letter while telling them each letter as they go. You can also use this opportunity to describe the sound each letter can make.

Another fun activity the kids like to do is ride their scooters. Create a path and a numbered parking lot with sidewalk chalk and direct them to a particular numbered space. This will help with number recognition.
