Bring light, airy textures with a coastal feel into your bedroom while keeping it modern with a wood grid accent wall in the perfect beachy color.
If there’s one thing I love, it’s an accent wall to truly define a space. I just took on my parent’s guest bedroom and installed a very inexpensive wood trim accent wall.
My mom’s taste is very modern with a love of the beach. I wanted to bring in some natural elements to remind her of her favorite place, while still keeping it sophisticated and modern with clean lines.
Modern Wood Accent Wall Materials + Supplies
The following is a list of materials and supplies I purchased to complete the accent wall.
- 1×2 primed trim
- 1.5″ brad nails
- caulk
- sandpaper
- tape measure
- level
- cordless brad nailer
- miter saw
- 5 pc. paint kit
- 1 gallon paint – color: Headspace
To start this wall off, I placed 5 vertical pieces of 1×2 trim board on the wall; one on each end and 3 evenly spaced apart. You will need to decide how large or small you want your squares to be in the accent wall.
Each board was nailed with 1.5″ brad nails shot in at various angles versus straight through the wall. This method allows the nails to act like a clamp, making it harder for them to pull off the wall.
I chose not to use Liquid Nails which is a more permanent method of adhering wood trim. If you decide to take this wall down somewhere down the line, you will need to be prepared to make repairs to your drywall when using a strong adhesive like Liquid Nails.
Once the vertical trim board was up, I measured the distance between each piece and cut my smaller wood trim to fit snug in between. Continue to measure each space down the wall to make adjustments for even the smallest variation.
The next step after all your trim is up will be to seal all seams and caulk wherever the wood meets the wall. This process is tedious, but will produce the most professional look.
Modern Coastal Paint – Headspace
Clare paint is a women owned business that will deliver all your paint project needs from their website to your door. We sampled a few different colors using the peel and stick paint swatches and ultimately chose the prettiest blue-green paint color, Headspace.
The 5 pc paint set was the perfect accessory to this project. The soft angled brush cut in nicely while the roller took on the larger squares.
I was extremely impressed with the color and coverage of this paint! Truly the best coastal paint color for this room.
Modern Coastal Decor
We refreshed this room’s decor with new bedding and coastal accents from Bealls Florida. I LOVE Bealls Outlet, but when I thought coastal, my head immediately went to the selection at Bealls Florida.
