first time mom tips, mom tricks, new mom tips and advice

When you first learn that you’re pregnant, usually you’re filled with excitement and then maybe a little fear and nervousness. All completely normal emotions as a new mom! Once others learn of your bundle on the way, the advice and opinions will start flowing in. What to expect during pregnancy (the good and bad) what to register for, etc. This can be an overwhelming time. Take the advice with a smile and nod and store it in the back of your mind just in case. Every pregnancy and baby is different! Now I’m not here to tell you how to raise your little one or scare you with horror stories…just a few practical tips for the new mom.

New Mom Tip #1

Take the advice with a grain of salt. Times are ever changing and so is the advice of pediatricians. How our parents raised us is very different from how babies are raise now. New information is always coming out about crib safety, car seat safety, sleep training, and when to start solids.

New Mom Tip #2

Trust your gut. This goes along with tip #1. If you feel like something is wrong, consult your pediatrician, not Google or your local mom Facebook group. When my first was a newborn she cried incessantly. I knew there was something wrong and it wasn’t just your typical newborn cries. Always go with your new mom instinct.

New Mom Tip #3

Give yourself grace. You just carried and grew a baby for 9+ months and then birthed them. Don’t expect to jump right back into your pre-maternity clothing or have a tidy house at all times. Chances are you may have visitors calling on you in the beginning wanting to see your new bundle. If you’re not up for it, that’s OK! It’s OK to say no. It’s also OK to let them come over without having a clean house. You may want to have a plan in place with your partner before baby comes regarding hospital/home visitors.

New Mom Tip #4

Always opt for convenience. One of the most handy tools I had as a new mom was a diaper changing basket. We lived in a two-story home and just having a c-section I wasn’t able to go up and down the stairs several times a day. My mom made up a basket that I took up at night and brought down first thing in the morning.

The diaper changing basket was so convenient! We filled the basket with enough diapers for the day, wipes, a change of clothes/pajamas (because blowouts), our favorite diaper cream, socks, nasal aspirator, along with other miscellaneous items. I would toss my cell phone in there and pain medication. If you’re breastfeeding you can include nipple cream and a nursing cover for when visitors come over.
