Today we’re giving a makeover to this $30 dresser we found on Facebook Marketplace. Our inspiration is coming from the Pottery Barn Kids Ava Regency Drawer Chest which retails for over $1,600.

Sometimes you can find some really great furniture pieces on Facebook Marketplace for free or very little money. With a little paint and some new hardware it can look brand new!
Take a look at this $30 dresser before:

Products Used for This Affordable Makeover
- degreaser cleaner
- bonding primer
- cabinet enamel paint
- removable wallpaper
- wood glue
- Kreg jig pocket hole maker
- kreg screws
- gold ring hardware
- sanding sponge
Step One: Cut and Reframe the Bottom
For this particular dresser, I decided to cut down the original bottom and build up a base with modern feet.
I used my circular saw to cut down approximately 2″ from the bottom.
Then I grabbed some scrap select pine and 2×2 wood pieces to build a new base using pocket holes.

Once the new legs were attached I used wood filler to fill in the seams and sanded smooth.
Step Two: Clean + Clean Well
Before priming, I used a degreaser cleaner to thoroughly wipe down the entire dresser and drawer fronts.
After cleaning, I wiped down everything with a clean wet rag to remove any residue left from the cleaner.
Step Three: Prime
This particular dresser was very shiny and slick so I did do a VERY quick scuff sand, but this isn’t always necessary if you use a good primer.
My most recent favorite primer is Behr’s Bonding Primer. Using a 4″ foam roller, the entire piece received one coat of this durable primer.
Once dry, take a sanding block and sand smooth. You can repeat the process if necessary, but I only use one coat of primer.
Step Four: Paint
For the actual paint job, I used my HomeRight paint sprayer. Nothing beats the ultra smooth finish of a spray job!
This cabinet and trim enamel is extremely durable and provides a nonstick finish in just an hour.
I loaded up the paint sprayer with paint and a small amount of water for thinning. After each coat of paint, sand lightly.
Step Five: Add Fun Drawer Liners
The inside of the drawers were previously lined and in great shape, so I decided to continue with it and use some leftover peel and stick wallpaper from our recent play room project. It adds a fun touch while protecting the drawers.
Step Six: Add new hardware
The inspiration piece from Pottery Barn had gold ring pulls which I was able to find on Amazon.
I drilled in new holes for the hardware using my Kreg Hardware Jig.
I shared real time progress of this makeover in my Instagram stories and actually did a poll on whether to do different knobs on the top drawer or keep them all the same. While 75% of my community said keep them all the same, I ultimately decided to change it up and I think it looks awesome!
