Organizing a small closet can be somewhat of a challenge, but with these organization tips you’ll be off to a great start.
Moving into our current home, we lost a lot of closet space in our master bedroom. Purging before a move is always good practice, but even that wasn’t enough.
Sometimes if your current small closet isn’t working for you then you need to consider reconfiguring your closet organization system. These are some tips and ideas of what we did to maximize our closet space.

Small Closet Organization Tips
Raise the Bar
When you’re working with a smaller closet, you need to maximize your vertical space. We raised the hanging bar to allow for another lower rod.

Most frequently worn clothing should be at eye level or in a reachable place.
Add Storage for Small Closets
Placing a cube organizer or dresser in the closet will grant you folded clothing space.
I like to keep our bedroom free of too much furniture, so we don’t use a dresser in the room. Instead, I used a cube organizer that was previously in our daughter’s room to organize folded t-shirts, sweatpants, etc. Another smaller drawer storage unit houses undergarments.

Shoe Organization for Your Closet
Shoe organization can be tricky. In order to take up the least amount of space possible, I purchased these shoe slots that double your shoe space. They have 4 positions depending on the height of your shoe and work well with my shoes and even my husband’s larger size shoe.
Add another level of shoe space with a shelf or by using 2 tension rods. The tension rod hack is a really good inexpensive option.

Small Closet Hanging Organization
Did you know that the type of hangers you use can actually save you space? I switched out our large plastic hangers with slim velvet hangers. Hanging more of your clothing will also help keep your drawers free of too much clutter.

A scarf hanger works well for hanging leggings and this tiered hanger minimizes space used for pants and jeans.

Out of Reach
Items that aren’t frequently used can be placed higher and out of the way. Upper shelving above hanging storage is the best spot for bags, purses, hats and seasonal clothing. If you have wall space, hooks can be used for hat display.

Purge, Purge, Purge!
Look, I get you. You have a really strong feeling those pants are going to come back in style, but guess what? Chances are you’re going to buy new ones when that time comes anyway. Purge frequently and donate!
If you live somewhere with actual seasons, store away off-season clothing in bins or space-saving vacuum bags.
Before and After!

We are now able to actually walk into our closet, spin around and get ready with a mirror all in the same space!
