Transform an Old Drawer into a Stunning Planter Box – Easy DIY!

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for a unique way to bring more greenery into your home or just wanting to tackle a fun DIY project over the weekend? Look no further! Today, I’m excited to share how you can transform an old nightstand drawer into a chic and modern planter box, complete with a custom-built stand made from 2x2s. This project not only helps in repurposing old furniture but also enhances your space with a touch of nature.

What You’ll Need

To get started, gather the following materials:

  • An old nightstand drawer
  • Sandpaper (medium grit)
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Paintbrush or a staining pad
  • Potting soil
  • Plants of your choice
  • 2×2 lumber (length depending on desired height)
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Safety goggles and gloves

Step 1: Prep and Paint the Drawer

Begin by giving your nightstand drawer a good cleaning and sanding. This helps remove any old paint or varnish and smoothens out rough edges, preparing it for a new finish. Once sanded, wipe the drawer down to remove any dust.

Next, choose a wood stain or paint that fits your style. I opted for black paint to give the drawer a sleek, modern look.

Apply the paint evenly using a paintbrush or sprayer, and allow it to dry completely. If painting, you might want to apply a primer first to ensure an even, smooth finish.

Step 2: Construct the Stand

While your drawer is drying, start building the stand. Cut your 2×2 lumber to create four legs and the frame to support the drawer. I recommend making the stand about 24 inches tall, which is a comfortable height for a planter.

Assemble the frame using wood glue and screws, making sure each joint is secure. The simplicity of the frame design not only adds to the modern aesthetic but also ensures stability for your planter.

Step 3: Assemble and Line the Planter

Once the stand is ready and your drawer is dry, fix the drawer onto the stand. Ensure it’s centered and stable.

Use an outdoor wood sealer, like Thompson’s WaterSeal, to protect the drawer from rot. Apply using a brush or roller. One coat is sufficient.

Be sure to add drainage holes to the bottom of the drawer box using a 1/2 inch drill bit.

Step 4: Fill and Plant

Fill the drawer with a good quality potting soil. Choose a mix that’s appropriate for the types of plants you’re planning to use. When you’re ready to plant, arrange your plants in the soil, positioning them to your liking. Be sure to give each plant enough space to grow.

Step 5: Enjoy Your New Planter Box!

Place your new planter box in a spot where it gets the right amount of sunlight based on the plants you’ve chosen. Water it as needed, and enjoy the burst of life it adds to your space!

Wrapping Up

This project is a great weekend activity that results in a beautiful and functional piece for your home. It’s satisfying to know that you’ve created something stylish and eco-friendly, breathing new life into something old.
