Jewelry Armoire Makeover with Spray Paint

Sharing is caring!

How to update an outdated jewelry armoire or any piece of furniture with a little sanding and spray paint. This is a very beginner friendly DIY.

Today I’m showing you how I took an outdated jewelry armoire and gave it some new life with this affordable furniture makeover. I got this armoire at a garage sale for $10, and it was in pretty good shape.

Products Used for This Affordable Makeover

Step One: Clean + Sand

I started off with cleaning the entire piece with Art of Green spray cleaner. This cleaner works well with removing tough grease and grime. Since this piece is very old, cleaning was super important. You will need to rinse down the piece when you’re done. Sometimes cleaners leave a film which can gunk up your sandpaper.

Next I sanded down the top, starting with a 120 grit sandpaper. This piece is not real wood, but it did have a wood veneer on top that I wanted to bring down to a natural state.

Once the dark stain color was sanded, I went over the piece with 220 and 320 grit sandpaper to make it smooth.

Step Two: Spray Paint

For the body of this piece I chose Krylon Fusion All in One spray paint. This particular paint is durable and doesn’t require you to sand or prime first. I used the color White in a gloss finish.

You will get the best finish by layering on the spray paint in very light coats to avoid drips; because the original color was very dark, I did 3 coats.

I decided to keep the original hardware and just updated it with Krylon gold spray paint.

Step Three: Stain

For the top of the jewelry armoire, I use my favorite stain color, Early American. One coat was all that was necessary. I sealed the top with three coats of polycrylic. Be sure to follow the directions on the polycrylic. A light sanding in between coats will give you that really smooth finish.

The Jewelry Armoire Reveal!

This piece is now a beauty! I’ll be honest, I didn’t like the style of this jewelry armoire one bit, but my daughter loved. With a few supplies this $10 piece turned out to be a super affordable statement piece.
